Maggie Modena & Pups Who Pack

Designer Maggie Welsh (Age 28) launched her digitally printed handbag and backpack line, Maggie Modena, in February, 2015 in Madison, WI. Although Maggie’s focus began with designing printed bags for people, she expanded into the pet-wear world, successfully funding her dog backpack harnesses, Pups who Pack, on Kickstarter in November, 2015.

Today both Maggie’s backpack and handbag line, as well as her dog backpack line, are sold worldwide through her website; while you can find Pups Who Pack at Shop Dog & Co in NYC, and Discover Dogs in Vancouver, Canada. Maggie’s dog packs have been featured in Brit + Co, Bustle, Gotham Magazine, ViralNova, Dogster, Modern Dog Magazine (Sep. 2016) as well as many insta-famous dogs including Doug the Pug, Carrie Fisher's dog Gary Fisher, PS.NY., Homer Puglicious, Bubba The Pug, and The Daily Walter.

More than a handbag or backpack, but rather a wearable piece of art, Maggie designs each bag’s textile herself through a mix of photos, drawings and paintings refined in Photoshop. Being a frequent traveler and adventure-seeker, Maggie’s bags reflect not only the utility that a traveler needs: padded laptop slots, easy-access pockets, long-lasting, heavy duty zippers, and comfortable padded straps, but also reflects the adventurous style of a traveler with a variety of prints derived from photos taken on trips, full of bold colors. Her most recent travel inspiration (to be seen in her Spring, 2017 collection) came from a five month cross-country US road trip where she worked and traveled in her camper with her husband and two dogs, Rhea (pug) & Toad (frenchie).

Born and raised in the countryside just outside of Madison, WI, Maggie found creative outlets to entertain her daydreaming mind. She found her way to the University of Wisconsin – Madison’s Textile and Apparel design program in 2009 and soon fulfilled her desire for adventure, moving to New York City in 2011 where she graduated with an Associates in Accessory Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology and Bachelors from UW-Madison. After graduating, Maggie landed a job designing handbags for brands such as Nicole Miller, Lucky Brand, Franco Sarto and Jessica Simpson. Maggie moved back to Madison in the Summer of 2013 where she began prototyping her first handbag line on a laser cutter at makerspace Sector67 as well as cultivating her knowledge in marketing working at high-end women’s boutique, iona.

Maggie Modena and Pups Who Pack are proudly made in Milwaukee, WI by a husband and wife manufacturing duo. Each print style is offered in limited quantities, while styles last and released two times a year in spring and fall, with special styles released additionally in summer and holiday for Pups Who Pack.
